Clavel de Piedra -
Memorial de Cuelgamuros

Architecture + Memorial

The project proposes a new architectural and landscape grammar for the Cuelgamuros Memorial, based on the idea of constructing a critical counterpart to the existing architecture. Not a replica, but a conscious projection that, through a gesture of volumetric symmetry and horizontality, deactivates the celebratory rhetoric and returns the site to a public, civil, and plural dimension.
The new threshold is a semicircular hypogeal portico that functions as an interpretation center and operational base for the construction of a new symbolic topography. At the heart of the composition emerges the design of a geometric flower, imprinted on the ground as an orientation map and metaphor for collective rebirth. The flower is simultaneously an icon and a functional structure: each of its parts defines a thematic space, a garden, an installation, an archive, a threshold, or a pause, hosting different narratives.
This abstract geometric structure is contrasted with an eclectic, sensorial, open landscape constructed from native and adaptive plant species, colors, draining surfaces, and changing textures. The projected landscape is not a framework, but a critical and generative body: a continually evolving "second nature" that embraces the temporal, ecological, and social stratification of the site.
The land itself becomes a narrative device, a fertile membrane upon which emotion, reflection, and conflict are imprinted. In this tension between formal order and living matter, a critical and civil space is born. The Memorial becomes a platform for active memory, capable of evolving over time through public experience.
